Episode 15 – Christmas Gifts

Podcast Episode 15

Welcome to the newest group members on Ravelry:

Thing 1 – knitting
-Finished my sister’s Stitch Surfers and another Trilobite hat.

– Almost finished – 3 items. 1= my son’s hat. 1898 Hat I LOVE the construction! And the Ms Babs doesn’t hurt along with some Classic Elite with cashmere!! Now I have to consult the patterns for the Mohawk hat to see how to affix the Mohawk and the braids. I have an idea for the braids already.
2= mom’s shawl. MISTAKE!! Better Together/You and I MKAL from Fiddlesticks Knitting designs.
3= Dog in Doghouse – from the Topsy Turvy Inside Out Knitted Toys book (Susan B. Anderson)

Thing 2 – spinning
NADA – I WANT to spin, but gotta get those gifts out. If I finish everything in good time for having the few weekdays before Christmas free, I want to spin some of my Fat Cat fiber.

Fat Cat Knits fiber – Cool Madras colorway. I ordered in a gradient, 6oz. and I want to spin it NoW!!

Club Awesome shipment was NFC, and I am not sure what to think. I love the dyeing – color is very saturated but I am not a huge fan of mohair (???) so not sure how I’ll like a scarf or cowl knit out of this. I did download the ACER shawl with the intention of using that to knit this up, but still unsure . . .

I WON a skein of yarn from a KAL I was doing in my Yarn Snobs group! Boho knits yarns, Serikos base – fingering weight with silk!! In the Oktoberfest colorway.

Bags for my mom and sister from Knittings My Bag – awesome. Will have son pick the pattern for the person – extra is for me!!!

First KAL of 2014: gonna be a knit the sweater you want KAL. I’m going to run it along with my local knit group too – HI WEGMANS Knitters!!!
For this KAL – you can knit any sweater you like. I am going to do the Miranda pullover from stash. I have an alpaca yarn that will work I THINK! Some others were mentioned in the group.
Feel free to join in – you can knit whatever sweater you want. I want to allow good time for finishing a garment, so let’s make it 2 months. Cast on New Year’s Eve/January 1st. I will mention it to my knit group on January 4th, and some of them may not be casting on until the 18th with me at group. I will probably cast on for New Year’s since it looks like I may be home :/

GERALD MCBOINGBOING and I went to Capitol Hill last week!!! He gets invited to be an advocate for the funding for diabetes research with the JDRF/Promise Campaign. He has been to one in the past with Steny Hoyer. This time he was also asked to meet with Barbara McKulski ON the hill, which was exciting – the capital building is a beautiful work of architecture, and I felt like Olivia Pope walking in the back way and thru the little guard shack on the employee side of the building!

Have a happy holiday – I will have holiday travel stories to tell when I see you again in 2014. Be safe, and I hope your knitting makes you happy!!

Episode 8 – All Spinzilla, All the Time

Episode 8 is up!

This week, my focus is Spinzilla, but I managed to get some things accomplished beforehand.

Two weekends ago, my son and I went up to the Baltimore Book Festival. We were aiming for a signature and reading with Adam Rex, and we succeeded! The True Meaning of Smeckday for him, Moonday for me. Also, Adam is quite charming!

I also mentioned seeing Cassandra Wilson live at the Bethesda Jazz and Blues Supper Club. She did not disappoint – AMAZING! Check her out if you love jazz music.

Thing 1: Dahlia is finished (well, except for sewing down that lace panel. Expect to see this one more time! Folded is up to the point where I need to start knitting sleeves.

Fox in Socks:Stitch Surfer is the pattern I’ll knit for the Knitting Samurai Plus 1 color KAL. Traveling Socks are going, going, going – or, rather, COMING to my house! I have three of the pairs of my group at my house right now. Gah! No pressure.

Thing 2: Spinzilla!! I have lots to spin and don’t want to be the slowpoke on the team (but I’m probably going to be. . .)

500 HatsAdvent Calendar scarf is a wonderful way to spend the holidays!

Oh The Thinks You Can Think: Sockhead Hat for Zac’s Reading teacher. He also gets a hat, and I want to make at least two Trilobite hats for gifts this year.

Everyone Needs A ThneedClub Awesome shipment came in! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

Be sure to stop by the Ravelry group to participate in the Whatcha’ Knittin’ thread. You could win a yarn-y prize!

Start thinking about an upcoming project that you could knit in BLUE! I am hatching a plan for an educational/awareness raising KAL using blue for National Diabetes Awareness Month in November. More details next time!

Episode 7 – Pieced Together

The latest episode is up here. Show notes to follow!

Episode 6 Is Up!

Episode 6 is now up on YouTube – click here.

Show Notes:

Thing 1/Knitting
A bit more progress was made on my Dahlia Cardigan by Heather Zopetti – I hope to make it to the finish with this KAL – check out the Yarniacs Podcast and their Fall Color Knit-Along. You just have to use one of the Pantone Fall Colors in your project, and style it for Fall.

Folded (Veera Valimaki) got a little more love this time around – I have the feeling I’ll be needing it soon!

Fox in Socks
I sent one Traveling Sock on it’s way this time, but I’m currently working on the one for Nwessman – in neon green (sock blank I dyed with kool-aid years ago, using a trellis pattern from the Field Guide to Knitting. Sock groups can be signed up for in the Knitter’s Brewing Sockaholics group.

I will knit another Skew sock out of some Inspiration Dyeworks yarn specially done up for the Knitting Samurai Plus One’s anniversary KAL. When the KAL actually begins. Doh!

Gertrude McFly!
The edging on my Pucker top did, indeed give out. The yarn just wasn’t the greatest, I think – dry rot? Now I’ll have to find a new yarn from stash to finish the edges with – let’s hope soon!

Oh The Thinks You Can Think!
Anniversary KAL with KSP1 – using Inspiration Dyeworks in a special self-striping colorway done up just for the podcast/KAL. Knit anything you want with it – should be fun to see the yarn as different projects.

Halos of Hope (direct link)/Podcaster Throwdown(RAV group link). I don’t think I’m up for a throwdown, but I am up for some hat knitting. If you want to join in, we can donate together (if you are a fellow podcaster), or I would be more than happy to get the hats to where they need to be (which looks like directly to the Knotty Girls, since that is who I heard this from – not Purlescence – they’re a tad far away)!

I found cheapo acrylic yarn good for knitting a baby toy that is sure to be drooled on by my nephew.

I’ll use the Dog in Doghouse pattern from Susan B. Anderson’s Topsy Turvy Inside Out Knitted Toys. I think he’ll love it!

See you next time!

Up to the gusset on the first Socks on A Plane sock – dragonfly fibers Djini sock, Reluctant Dragon colorway.

Thing 2 – Spinning
Finished spinning Crown Mountsin BFL, Rise of the Phoenix colorway. Need to ply – one braid of 155 yards/2-ply so far.
Looking for my handcarders to make my own luxury Punis out of a wool/sea ell braid that I wold like to spin with my mini Turkish spindle.

Omitted, to save time: I Can Read With My Eyes Shut – Jodi Picoult’s ‘Storyteller’ was a great read, just starting Bruce Courtenay’s ‘Power of One’ and I’m loving the English accent if the narrator.
